President Donald Trump celebrated Germany’s election results as polls projected the country’s conservative factions garnered a decisive victory.
As national election results came trickling in Sunday afternoon, polls showed the country’s top conservative chief, Friedrich Merz, would likely replace socialist Chancellor Olaf Scholz as Germany’s next leader.
Trump applauded the early results in a post to Truth Social, saying that it “looks like the conservative party in Germany has won the very big and highly anticipated election.”

“Much like the USA, the people of Germany got tired of the no common sense agenda, especially on energy and immigration, that has prevailed for so many years. This is a great day for Germany, and for the United States of America under the leadership of a gentleman named Donald J. Trump. Congratulations to all — many more victories to follow!!!” the president wrote in all-caps.
Merz declared victory on Sunday afternoon after his Christian Democratic Union party was projected to win approximately 30% of the vote. The Alternative for Germany party, which was publicly backed by top Trump ally Elon Musk, raked in a historic number of votes at roughly 20%, heralding the best-ever results in an election. The two right-leaning parties topped Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s ruling Social Democratic Party, which came in third with an estimated 16.5% of votes.
The unusually strong showing for the AfD showcased SDP’s fallout with voters. The unexpectedly strong competition it posed to CDU also highlighted the lackluster enthusiasm for Merz’s establishment conservative party.

AfD co-leader Tino Chrupalla said that “we have achieved something historic today” as the results came in.
“We are now the political center and we have left the fringes behind us,” he said.
