Why you won’t get a Supplemental Security Income check in December

Millions of Supplemental Security Income beneficiaries typically receive one payment at the beginning of each month, but that won’t be the case in December.

The SSI payment, worth up to $943 for an individual, usually goes out to eligible recipients on the first day of each month.

But beneficiaries on Dec. 1 are not set to receive their customary check.

That’s because Dec. 1 falls on a Sunday, and SSI payments do not go out over the weekend or on a holiday.

Eligible recipients instead received two SSI checks in November. Beneficiaries received their early December payment on Friday, Nov. 29 in addition to their November SSI check, which came on the first of the month.

The same pattern happened in August. That month, eligible retirees received two month’s payments because Sept. 1 fell on a Sunday.

TRUMP’S ‘NO TAXES ON OVERTIME’ PROPOSAL: WHAT TO KNOW

Eligible applicants will, however, still receive one SSI  payment in December. That’s because they will get January’s payment early. As Jan. 1, 2025, falls on a holiday, recipients will get their payment for the first month of the new year on Tuesday, Dec. 31.

SSI payments are given to people living with debilitating disabilities that affect their income.

To meet eligibility requirements, filers need to be at least partially blind or have a “physical or mental condition(s) that seriously limits their daily activities for 12 months or more or may be expected to result in death.”

Couples filing jointly can receive up to $1,415, and essential persons, or those who provide SSI recipients with necessary care, can receive up to $472.

SSI payments and regular Social Security benefits are not connected. Those who receive Social Security payments do not automatically qualify for SSI payments and vice versa.
