Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) is calling on Canadians to visit California as President Donald Trump strains United States-Canada relations with tariffs and strict border enforcement.
On Monday, Newsom released a video on social media expressing how his state and Canada have “always shared so much in common," instructing Canadians not to let Trump “ruin” their beach plans.
“California, it's the ultimate playground, 2,000 miles from Washington, and a world away in mindset. From our iconic beaches and national parks to world-class wine, food, and outdoor adventure, there's something here for everyone,” Newsom said in the video.
Newsom shared that in 2024, nearly 2 million Canadians visited California. According to the governor's office, tourists from Canada alone spent $3.72 billion in the Golden State.
Since Trump entered office a second time, he has mocked Canada and its political leaders by calling it the 51st state, threatening to annex the country, and calling the then-prime minister "Governor Trudeau." He has slapped Canada with 25% tariffs, and his administration has enforced stricter customs and border policies. As a result, Canada has issued a travel advisory to the U.S. Canadians who plan to stay in the U.S. for more than 30 days must register their travels with the government, a previously unenforced rule.

Statistics Canada found that in February, Canadian travel to the U.S. by car fell by 23% and by airplane by 13.1%.
International travel to the U.S. dropped by 12% in March compared to March 2024, according to the National Travel and Tourism Office.
