An American citizen detained by the Taliban in Afghanistan last month has been freed, former U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan and Iraq Zalmay Khalilzad announced.
American woman Faye Hall was detained on charges of using a drone without authorization in February.
Hall was released on Thursday following a court order and with logistical support from Qatar in its role as the United States's protecting power in Afghanistan, a source with knowledge of the release told the Washington Examiner.
"American citizen Faye Hall, just released by the Taliban, is now in the care of our friends, the Qataris in Kabul, and will soon be on her way home," Khalilzad posted on X Saturday.
"Thank you, #Qatar, for your ongoing and steadfast partnership," he added.
Since the decision, the Qataris have been coordinating with the relevant Afghan authorities and the U.S. Embassy in Doha to complete the final legal requirements to secure her release, the source said.
In a video released by Khalilzad, who was ambassador to Iraq and Afghanistan during the George W. Bush administration, Hall praised Trump for securing her release.
"Mr. President, I voted for you twice. First of all, I'm so glad you are in the office. It's the new era, and in this situation, I'm glad you are the president," she said.
"Thank you for bringing me home. I've never been so proud to be an American citizen. Thank you, Mr. President. I just want you to know all the women in the Afghan jail they always ask me, 'When is Trump coming?' Truly they just treat you like their savior. They're waiting for you to come and set them free," she added. "Just sends regards and just don't want to forget all those women still in jail and don't have any rights. Thank you, Mr. President, and God bless you."

Qatar has played a main role in securing the release of Hall and the release of George Glezmann earlier this month, along with Ryan Corbett and William McKenty in January. The nation has maintained diplomacy with the Taliban since they took over Afghanistan in 2021.

It is unclear if the British couple that was detained alongside Hall, Barbie and Peter Reynolds, have also been released. The elderly couple had been running school projects for 18 years and continued after the Taliban took power.
The Washington Examiner reached out to the State Department for comment but did not receive a response.
